Automotive Mold Manufacturer Eliminates Machine Fires with MicroSol® 555
A leading manufacturer of molds and plastic components for the automotive industry has a 40 machine operation featuring seven UNISIG® gun drills used primarily for milling. UNISIG is one of the largest producers of deep hole drilling machines.
THE CHALLENGE
Before contacting Master Fluid Solutions®, the manufacturer used an oil-based cutting fluid with a low flash point, which led to three dangerous fires that risked serious harm to their workers. Each incident shut down operations for extended periods to clear out smoke, clean machines, and replace coolant.

The previous straight oil solution drove up fluid costs and left difficult-to-clean residues on both the cutting tools and surrounding machinery. Also, the overall air quality in the workshop environment was poor due to mist, smoke, and odors from the metalworking oil.
THE SOLUTION
The automotive mold and plastic components manufacturer switched to TRIM® MicroSol® 555, a water-based, highlubricity, microemulsion cutting fluid with a long sump life. Designed specifically for the automotive industry, MicroSol 555 is compatible with both ferrous and non-ferrous metals and offers very high lubricity with greater cooling efficiency than traditional oil-based solutions.
THE RESULTS
After using TRIM MicroSol 555 for two months, the customer has eliminated fires in their operation. As a water-based formula, the MicroSol 555 has no flashpoint or flammability concerns. The manufacturer has also reduced coolant concentration down to 18- 20 percent, requiring less fluid than the previous oil-based cutting fluid. Tool life has improved, as well as part and machine cleanliness.

The workshop is noticeably cleaner as there is no oil residue on cutting tools or nearby surfaces, and the objectionable odor of the oil-based cutting fluid is no longer present.

With the inclusion of TRIM MicroSol 555, the customer is now using Master Fluid Solutions cutting fluids for all of its machines.
THE NUMBERS
  • Reduced coolant concentration to 18-20% (compared to previous oil-based cutting fluid
  • Switched all 40 machines to water-based cutting fluid
  • Eliminated fires and other coolant hazards
